Arne Slot shares dressing room secret after reminding players of Liverpool 'standards'

Arne Slot has revealed he doesn’t like to lose his temper with his Liverpool players, although he did have to remind them of the standards he expects at the weekend.

It has been a near-perfect start to life at Anfield for the Dutchman since he took over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, with just the one defeat to his name in eight games. His side currently sits top of the Premier League, and will be aiming to make it two wins out of two in the Champions League against Bologna tomorrow.

Slot though has maintained there is still room for improvement, especially after being left unhappy with the Reds’ performance during the closing stages of their 2-1 win over Wolves on Saturday. Despite picking up another three points to take them above Manchester City, it certainly wasn’t a complete performance from Liverpool at Molineux.

Slot was particularly displeased with his side wasting opportunities to kill the game off during the final 15 minutes, despite restricting their opponents to very little in that time. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s Champions League clash though, he revealed he kept his cool in the dressing room.

“I don’t lose my temper that much and I don’t think it’s a good idea to lose your temper every single day because then players at a certain moment feel like, ‘Yeah, there he is again screaming at us.’ That doesn’t work, I think it’s better to show them the actual things they do,” Slot said.

“The positive thing about this group is that, maybe I don’t accept mediocrity but these players themselves don’t accept it as well. So, even after the game I saw one or two players – maybe a few more even – that were also frustrated, not only about the last 15 minutes but also about the way we started the game. That was also not of the standards I’m expecting from a Liverpool team or from these players.

“It’s not only about me, it’s also about the players, that they do not accept these things or these moments as well. And that’s also normal.”

Alexis Mac Allister backed up his head coach’s comments, insisting Liverpool still has work to do. “I think there is room for improvement,” the midfielder said. “The performance against Wolves wasn't the best but I think when you have a manager and a team that realizes that, it's a very positive thing. We can improve that.”

Liverpool.com says: It’s impossible to be perfect all the time, but it’s important to keep the standards as high as possible. Liverpool got away with their performance against Wolves, but they will face plenty of better sides who could have punished them in that situation, so the players need to make sure they learn from Saturday and Slot’s comments.
