Arne Slot singles out two Liverpool stars for helping Darwin Nunez do as he asked

Liverpool forward was an impressive performer when he entered the field in the against Chelsea last weekend and he followed that up with another good showing — and a goal — in the clash with RB Leipzig.

Before the European clash, head coach was asked what he wanted to see from Nunez, who was in for the injured , and his message was a simple one. Essentially, the Uruguayan was : maintaining his level of off-the-ball work from the Chelsea game and finding the back of the net.

Scoring the only goal of the match in the first half, Nunez delivered on both counts. He should have won a penalty kick, too, when he was brought down by Willi Orban, but the referee inexplicably gave a goal kick, and the VAR failed to intervene.

"I asked for a goal and he gave us one," Slot told TNT Sports post-match. "In the lead-up to the goal, was very important, as was Mo [Salah], again, with the assist. It was a team goal.

"I would have loved the one from Cody to go in as that started all the way back at the goalkeeper, playing through their press. I would have been even happier if we scored that. It was pleasing to see Darwin did a very good job today."

Liverpool.com says: Nunez was very good again here and the timing, if Jota is set to be out for a period, which was unfortunately always a strong possibility, could hardly have been better. Liverpool will need Nunez to step up again versus Arsenal if he is required to start at the Emirates Stadium next Sunday but he has got into a good groove now and appears to be heading in the right direction.

While scoring goals is important, the rest of Nunez's game is what needed to develop. He hasn't been caught offside as often this season and he is doing more work heading back the other way in terms of winning the ball back and helping link attacks. There is a long way to go still, but there are promising signs, for sure.
