Bank holiday plans explained ahead of England's Euro 2025 final vs Spain

Despite the Lionesses' impressive journey to the Euro 2025 final, it has been confirmed that there will be no additional bank holiday should England Women triumph over Spain on Sunday (5pm).

The team secured their spot in the final with a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory against Italy, setting the stage for a grand finale against Montse Tome's squad in Basel.

Following the win over Italy, Prime MinisterSir Keir Starmerhailed the team as 'an inspiration to the nation. ' In England and Wales, pub licensing hours will be extended until 01:00 BST post-match for those wishing to celebrate.

The government has also assured that the Lionesses will receive due recognition upon their return, irrespective of the match outcome.

The Liberal Democrats, however, have called on the government to acknowledge the team's talent, success, and historic achievement by declaring a public bank holiday.

Their culture, media and sport spokesperson Max Wilkinson told BBC Sport: "Fans and patriots across the country deserve the chance to celebrate the talent, success and historic achievement of this amazing team.

"A bank holiday would also give our hospitality industry a much-needed assist and boost."

It's worth noting that there was no bank holiday when England clinched their first Euros title in 2022. Instead, Starmer suggested a 'proper day of celebration'.

He reiterated this sentiment in 2023 when England reached the World Cup final, suggesting on X that 'there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home.'

Ahead of the game, England's manager Sarina Wiegman said: "I'm feeling good, really looking forward to it and happy we're still in the tournament.

"Spain are an incredible opponent but we got through too. We're in a good place, players are recovering.

"We know them really well and they know us really well. We have tactical challenges but we'll give them tactical challenges - we hope to win.

"Every tournament provides different dynamics but this team is really calm and getting ready. Everyone is committed and has a role.

"Everyone supports one another. We trained with the finishers, they are good sessions and everyone is ready to step up and play and supportive of the starters.

"I haven't been thinking about [winning] but from experience we know it will be crazy. We're fully focused on the game."
