Great British Bake Off drama as contestant walks away in tears when bake goes horribly wrong

Send Push

A contestant on the Great British Bake Off was left in tears and walked off set this week after his showstopper turned into a disaster.

John, who has been wowing viewers and judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith over the past few weeks, had a tough time during bread week. Achieving a Hollywood handshake during bread week - Paul's speciality - is notoriously difficult, but things took a turn for the worse for John during his Showstopper bake.

When his bagels didn't rise to the surface as expected, he was overcome with emotion and left the tent, with later going to comfort him. Alison tried to lift his spirits by sharing a story from her time on when she knew she'd be leaving, but her dance partner reassured her by saying 'don't worry, the other person could fall over'.

Later, when Prue and Paul went to inspect the bagels, John told them to "not even bother" as Paul admitted he couldn't eat them.

The rest of his bake didn't fare much better, with Paul suggesting he would have preferred a more unusual shape for John's colourful buns, reports .

When John explained that the bagels sunk in the water, Paul suggested: "It sounds like you overproved them so when they hit the hot water, it forces them to drop so by the time you get them, they're flat."

John proudly presented his lemon and ginger buns, but the verdict from Paul was that they lacked adequate lemon zest and needed more proofing time. In a light-hearted response to the judges' scrutiny over the bagels, John suggested, "Use it as a frisbee".

Prue Leith said it was an "impressive" centrepiece by John but added it was a "pity about the bagels". Reflecting on his performance, John confessed to the camera: "It went as expected. I was happy with how it looked. I knew today wasn't going to be my day."

Ultimately, it was John's turn to leave the show. He took the news of his departure well, remarking to his peers: "It's fine, it was expected," while receiving comfort from judges Paul and Prue.

Later he added: "It's ok, I've just had a bad week. Because everybody's so talented, you drop the ball then it's your time to go. To the first Star baker of this season, I had a really good week last week as well, but you know what - the tears are tears of pride."

The Great British Bake Off airs at 8pm on Tuesdays on Channel 4.
