Man Utd fail to make the most of Jose Mourinho advice as Erik ten Hag's side stall again

Send Push

Manchester United brought up a hat-trick of draws in the after surrendering a precious lead in Instanbul.

The Red Devils had failed to win either of their opening games in Europe ahead of Thursday night's trip to 's Fenerbahce, who had promised to give and co the proverbial welcome from hell in a bid to pile more misery on the Dutchman.

United touched down in good spirits . But while they may have turned a corner domestically, the pressure is still on them to turn their form in Europe around.

Eyebrows were raised when Ten Hag revealed right-back Noussair Mazraoui would be playing as a No.10 per-match. But the Morocco star had a hand in United's slick opener, which was coolly dispatched by Christian Eriksen; a No.10 by trade.

A slack start to the second half enabled Youssef En-Nesyri to restore parity just four minutes after the break to ensure United's wait for a three-point haul in Europe would extend to at least next month.

Ten Hag heeds Mourinho warning

If there was a fixture Ten Hag could have done without given the scrutiny that has been on him in recent weeks, it was a trip to Fenerbahce to play Mourinho.

The prospect of outwitting Mourinho, who has excelled in Europe throughout his career, in the cauldron of Istanbul was arguably a daunting one on paper.

After all, Mourinho himself had previously been burned. Speaking back in 2016 after his United side were beaten by Fenerbahce, he said: “I am disappointed as I have quite a big experience of playing against Turkish teams. I pass to the players all my experience, and my experience is that when you play against them at home it’s easy always – 2-0 or 4-0.

“You come to Turkey and it’s a completely different story. I told them to wait for that and not be focused on an easy game, be ready for a completely different game but we started the game sleeping.”

It seemed as though United had heeded that warning when they rode out the early storm and broke the deadlock through Eriksen in the 15th minute. But some passive defending saw them surrender said lead just four minutes into the second half.

Unfortunately for United, that ultimately proved to be the difference between them breaking their duck in Europe and getting one over on their old boss - - and having to settle for a point.

And while a point away at Fenerbahce isn't to be sniffed at, United's inability to get wins on the board against FC Twente and FC Porto in previous games means that their tally of three points from three games in the Europa League doesn't make for great reading when it comes to their current boss - and nor does the fact they haven't won a European match under him for 12 months.
