In a webinar organized by Money9 on cyber fraud, it has come to light that retired people are the most victims of fraud. Fraudsters often trap people in their net by scaring or luring them. What is Digital Arrest Scam?

Digital arrest is a type of cyber fraud in which fraudsters introduce themselves as CBI, Police, ED, or other government officials and work to scare and threaten people. Fraudsters assure people that if the victim does not listen, legal action can be taken against them. Fraudsters extort money by arresting people online.

Create fear and panic.

Control your activity on a video call.

Demand money

Disappear as soon as the money is transferred.

How to avoid it?

There is no provision like 'digital arrest' in Indian law because if the police have to arrest you, they will come to your house with a warrant.

Don't panic

Do not share any information.

Disconnect the call immediately.

This is how fraudsters play the 'game'

Phishing: Fraudsters send you fake emails and messages with links, on clicking which you either reach a fake site or malware or a virus enters your device.

Lottery and Job Fraud: If an unknown person is luring you to win a job or lottery, then understand that you can be a victim of fraud, so act wisely and disconnect the call immediately. Such people ask for money in the name of registration fee or tax, and once the money is sent, the fraudsters disappear.

Fake Customer Care Number: Fraudsters know that people search for customer care numbers through Google search, which is why fraudsters bring fake customer care numbers to the first page of Google search results with the help of technology, and as soon as you call these fake numbers, you get trapped in their trap.

Keep these things in mind to avoid fraud.

Do not make the mistake of clicking on unknown links.

Do not make the mistake of sharing OTP, CVV, or ATM PIN with any unknown person.

Use strong passwords on mobile and laptop, and two-step verification in apps.

Use anti-virus software on your phone and other devices.

If a person is cheated, then that person should immediately register a complaint on the Cyber Crime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in). Your vigilance is the only way to avoid digital fraud.
