As we told you through our earlier article WhatsApp is the world's most popular instant messaging app, which has billions of users all over the world. They say that with any facility comes a dilemma if recent reports are to be believed, cybercriminals are targeting pensioners, robbing their life savings by posing as Central Pension Accounting Office (CPAO) officials, which has increased anxiety among vulnerable senior citizens, let's know the complete details about it.

How the scam works

Impersonation of CPAO officials: Cyber thugs contact pensioners, posing as CPAO officials, and threaten that their pension may be stopped if a specific form is not completed.

Submitting WhatsApp form: After this initial contact, they send a WhatsApp form asking for personal details such as bank account number and Pension Payment Order (PPO) number.

Bank account breach: Once pensioners provide this sensitive information, criminals gain unauthorized access to their bank accounts, causing significant financial losses.

How to protect yourself from fraud

Do not ask for any personal information: Remember that no legitimate authority will ask for personal information like your PPO number or bank details over WhatsApp or phone calls.

Verify suspicious messages: If you receive a suspicious message, always confirm its authenticity by calling the official CPAO or your bank's helpline.
