New Delhi [India], October 2 (ANI): Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Thursday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his "attack on democracy" remarks in Colombia.
Meghwal said the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha is becoming accustomed to defaming India on foreign soil.
"It has become a habit for Rahul Gandhi to defame the country's constitutional institutions abroad. The people of the country do not approve of this behaviour," Union Minister told ANI.
The remarks come after Gandhi on Thursday took a swipe at the BJP-led government, asserting that the biggest challenge India is witnessing is the attack on its democracy.
Speaking at an event at EIA University of Colombia, Gandhi highlighted the issue of "structural flaws" and suggested that the country's diverse traditions must be allowed to thrive.
"India has strong capabilities in areas like engineering and healthcare, so I am very optimistic about the country. But at the same time, there are also flaws in the structure that India has to correct. The biggest challenge is the attack on democracy taking place in India," Gandhi said.
He added that the democratic system in India is under attack, which is a "major risk" or threat.
Earlier in the day, Arjun Ram Meghwal visited a store of Khadi India to promote the boost in consumption of Swadeshi products as well as Khadi.
"Sewa Pakhwada was organised from 15th Sept to 2nd Oct. During every day of the Sewa Pakhwada, we promoted Swadeshi products. Today, as part of the efforts to become 'Atmanirbhar', we are promoting Khadi," he said.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and BJP leader Jay Panda also visited a Khadi India store.
"PM Modi is promoting Swadeshi, Vocal for Local, Atmanirbharta, and Khadi is the biggest symbol of Swadeshi. There is a lot of enthusiasm among the public to buy Khadi products," he said.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the introduction of the concepts of Swadeshi and Khadi to the country not only improved the lives of impoverished people but also accelerated the freedom movement.
Shah said that Mahatma Gandhi awakened the people of the country and made them stand against the British. (ANI)
