Of the remaining nine matches in , Match No. 63 between Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals is the most consequential. Three teams have confirmed their spots in the playoffs in the tournament and MI and DC are the only teams remaining in contention for the fourth spot.
Both teams had suffered losses at the hands of Gujarat Titans, and interestingly, in their own homes as well. MI's loss to GT in Mumbai was a see-sawing thriller. GT got a good start with the ball, removing both openers early. Will Jacks and Suryakumar Yadav rebuilt the innings, but GT's bowlers struck back at the death on a difficult surface.
GT's top order set out on their trademark style chasing the DLS target rather than the actual one. Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler kept the scorecard ticking until Sherfane Rutherford blitzed GT back into the match. At the 15-over point, the rain struck with GT ahead of the game. After the resumption Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult took important wickets to set GT's batting back. The rain struck once again and when the game resumed, GT needed 15 runs off the last over. Deepak Chahar shaped up to bowl the final over and it went 4, 1, 6, 2nb, 1, W, 1 as GT got home in a humdinger.
The Titans' win over DC in Delhi though, was far more clinical. KL Rahul recovered from a slow start in the powerplay to score an important century including with cameos from the other batters. GT's openers, Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan, took no risks and chased the target of 200 runs all by themselves. Sai Sudharsan scored a century while Gill supported him with an unbeaten 93.
MI and DC have already faced each other once in the tournament before, in Delhi. Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav got starts while Tilak Varma's fifty and Naman Dhir's cameo gave MI a strong total. DC lost Jake Fraser-McGurk on the first ball of the chase, but Karun Nair appeared as a revelation. Nair single-handedly carried DC's chase until his dismissal, at which point it unravelled. Karn Sharma triggered a collapse of DC's middle order that eventually left them 12 runs short of their target. The end of DC's innings had a bizzare sequence where they lost three wickets off the last three balls of the innings.
