Mohammed Shami tied the knot with former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) cheerleader Hasin Jahan in 2014, but the couple parted ways in 2018 when the latter filed an FIR against her husband and family, alleging domestic violence and abuse.

During the ongoing legal battle, the judge of the Calcutta High Court explained that the figure of INR 4 lakhs was decided upon considering Shami's earnings, his daughter's future, and the lifestyle his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, had been enjoying before they separated.

Jahan had initially demanded INR 10 lakh in total, INR 7 lakh for herself, and INR 3 lakh for her daughter. However, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, July 2, directed the experienced Indian fast bowler to pay INR 1.5 lakh to her wife and INR 2.5 lakh to her daughter every month.

The maintenance amount saw a massive jump from the previous figure of INR 1.30 lakh, which was decided on the basis of a district sessions court order in 2023. Shami had received a lot of support and empathy from his fans after that verdict.

After the Calcutta High Court judge shared the verdict with both concerned parties, Jahan spoke to the media, mentioning that it is a huge win for her. However, she feels that the maintenance amount should have been greater, considering the kind of lavish lifestyle Shami leads as well as the inflation rate in recent years.

"The lifestyle that Shami Ahmed lives ₹4 lakh is less. We had demanded ₹10 Lakh every month for seven years and four months back. Now that the cost of things has also increased, we will go for 'CAVEAT'. This order by Calcutta High Court is a huge win for me. While I respect the judgment by the court, I feel that as per Shami Ahmed's status, we should receive more money so that I can easily maintain my daughter's future," Jahan was quoted as saying by Free Press Journal.

Jahan also claimed that she had been forced by Shami to quit her modelling and acting careers. She said that she is currently not working anywhere, and that the Bengal speedster will have to look after her and their daughter's expenses.

“I used to model and act before I got married. Shami forced me to quit my profession. He wanted me to live only a housewife's life. I loved Shami so much that I happily accepted it... But now I have no earnings of my own. Shami has to bear all the responsibility for our maintenance. That is why we had to approach the court when he denied this,” she said.

On the work front, Shami is hoping to make a comeback to the Indian Test setup after being ignored by the selectors while naming the squad for the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He did play a part in India's triumphant Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year. However, his form and fitness during the subsequent Indian Premier League (IPL) were questioned by experts and fans.
