Chennai Super Kings ( CSK) are set to rebuild the squad after finishing last in IPL 2025. There were far too many loopholes in the original squad assembled in the mega auction. Reports suggest that MS Dhoni, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and the team owners had a meeting in Chennai recently.
Although some of it was filled with a young core midway through the tournament with players like Ayush Mhatre, Urvil Patel and Dewald Brevis, the team could not avoid its worst-ever season. This has now led to the franchise set to part ways with some of their older stars so that there’s money in the auction to go for younger match-winners, TOI reported.
The reported stated that senior off-spinner R Ashwin, who was bought for Rs 9.75 cr, might be on his way out of the team. There is also a question mark over future of players like Devon Conway (Rs 6.25 cr), Rachin Ravindra (Rs 4 cr), Rahul Tripathi (Rs 3.4 cr), Sam Curran (Rs 2.4 cr), Gurjapneet Singh (2.2 cr), Nathan Ellis (2 cr), Deepak Hooda (1.75 cr), Jamie Overton (1.5 cr) and Vijay Shankar (1.2 cr).
This would add Rs 34.45 crore, while there might also be an additional purse CSK might have Rs 40 crore for the mini auction, giving them the advantage for players like Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who had a stellar comeback against the West Indies or an attacking opener like Ben Duckett, who could play the aggressor at the top, while captain Ruturaj Gaikwad hold an end.
The team, struggling with a lack of firepower in the top and middle order, will look to strengthen three areas, a hitter at the top, a middle-order Indian enforcer and a quality pacers.
Can Samson deal go through?
Meanwhile, CSK has shown interest in Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson, who might leave the franchise after a fallout with the owners, as reported by Cricbuzz.
However,it may be difficult for CSK to get him before the auction because the team is not keen on exchanging any of its key players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana and Shivam Dube, TOI reported.
The only possible way for Samson to become a part of CSK seems to be a ‘cash-only’ deal. This is easier said than done and the CSK management will need to do a lot of convincing.
Dhoni to play next season?
The 45-year-old Dhoni, who led the team in the previous season following Gaikwad's injury, has not hinted at retirement. The last season didn’t go well and the franchise believes that their former captain will be part of the playing mix for one more season. Dhoni himself said he will take the call after some time, looking at how his body shapes up.
