US intelligence has alerted former President Donald Trump about specific threats from Iran to assassinate him, according to a statement from his presidential campaign on Tuesday.
“President Trump was briefed earlier today by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence regarding real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an effort to destabilize and sow chaos in the United States,” said Steven Cheung, Trump campaign communications director.
Cheung added that intelligence officials noted increased and coordinated threats in the past few months, and law enforcement agencies are working to ensure Trump’s safety and protect the presidential election from interference.
The campaign did not provide further details on these threats. This warning comes amid mounting international pressure on Iran to reduce tensions in Lebanon, where Israel has conducted airstrikes against Hezbollah, a group supported by Tehran.
Iran has previously denied U.S. claims of interfering in American affairs. Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations in New York and the ODNI did not immediately respond to requests for comment late on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, a Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from an alleged plot to assassinate an American politician in retaliation for the 2020 killing by the U.S. of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani.
The defendant named Trump as a potential target but had not conceived the scheme as a plan to assassinate the former president, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Earlier this summer, Iran denied claims of plotting to kill Trump, which came after a gunman attacked a rally in Pennsylvania, resulting in one death and injuries to the presidential candidate. Following the July 13 attack, US media reported that authorities had obtained intelligence about a potential Iranian plot against Trump, leading to increased security for him. Iran labeled these accusations as "malicious."
Additionally, the US has accused Iran of hacking into Trump’s campaign, alleging Tehran’s intent to influence the 2024 election.
