India on Sunday warned Pakistan of a fierce response if ceasefire understanding violations recur along the Line of Control, after the Pakistani army broke a temporary truce within hours of agreeing to it on May 10.
“We have sent another hotline message to my counterpart highlighting these violations and a firm and clear intent to respond fiercely if repeated tonight or later,” said DGMO Lieutenant General Rajiv Ghai.
Addressing a media briefing, Ghai said that the Pakistani Director General of Military Operations had reached out on the hotline to propose a cessation of hostilities, which was accepted. “My communication with the Pak DGMO was conducted at 15:35 hours yesterday and resulted in cessation of firing from 1700 hours on the 10th of May,” Ghai said.
However, Pakistan violated the understanding just hours after the agreement. “Disappointingly, and expectedly, it took only a couple of hours for the Pak army to violate these arrangements,” he said.
Ghai confirmed that India responded strongly to ceasefire violations that occurred through the night and early morning. “These violations were responded to robustly,” he said, asserting India’s commitment to defending its territory and citizens.
Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated since the terror attack in Pahalgam, which left 26 innocent lives dead. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted military offensive aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure across the border. The operation included precision strikes on identified camps housing terrorists linked to previous major attacks, including the hijacking of IC-814 and the Pulwama bombing. Following the Indian strikes, Pakistan retaliated with drone and missile attacks targeting Indian military positions and civilian areas.
India has exercised restraint so far, Ghai said, but further provocations will not be tolerated. “We have thus far exercised immense restraint and our actions have been focused, non-escalatory. However, any threat to the sovereignty, safety of our citizens will be met with decisive force,” he said.
The DGMO also revealed that Pakistan lost at least 35-40 military personnel in India's retaliation and India's 10 men were martyred.
