SC seeks report on Delhi air quality

Send Push
The Supreme Court on Monday sought a status report from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on the deteriorating air quality in Delhi.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran passed the direction after it was apprised that most of the air quality monitoring stations remained shut during Diwali in Delhi.

Senior Advocate Aparajita Singh, who is amicus curiae in the matter, requested for a report from the CAQM.

"There needs to be a report from CAQM on the current air pollution status. Out of 37, only 9 monitoring systems were functioning in Delhi during Diwali," she submitted. The bench then called for a status report from the CAQM. The SC had last month permitted the sale and bursting of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR during the Diwali festival with severe restrictions. A day after the recent Diwali celebrations, the air quality in the national capital severely worsened.
