UP School Holidays 2025: Schools closed Aug 14–17 for Chehlum, Independence Day, and Janmashtami

Students in Uttar Pradesh are set to enjoy a long weekend in August 2025, as schools will be shut from August 14 to August 17 due to a cluster of major festivals and observances. With Chehlum, Independence Day, and Janmashtami falling back-to-back, the state will witness a four-day holiday stretch. The break will be applicable to most government and private schools, as per the UP government’s 2025 holiday calendar.

1. Chehlum – August 14, 2025
Observed 40 days after Ashura, Chehlum is a significant day for the Muslim community, marking the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Processions and prayers are held in cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, and Moradabad.

2. Independence Day – August 15, 2025
Marking 79 years of India’s independence from British rule, this national holiday is celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programs, and patriotic performances in schools. This year, the day will also serve as the start of the extended break.

3. Janmashtami – August 16, 2025
Celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, Janmashtami is marked by events such as dahi handi, Raas Leela, and devotional singing in temples and schools across the state.
