Despite being the world’s richest man, Elon Musk is known for his extreme minimalism—a lifestyle that even affects how he hosts his own family.
Maye Musk , his 77-year-old mother, revealed in an interview with The Times UK that Elon’s wealth doesn’t translate into luxury when she visits him. Describing her trips to his SpaceX base in Texas, she said, “I have to sleep in the garage,” explaining, “You can’t have a fancy house near a rocket site.”
She added, “Tosca and I were joking the other day about how we all lived in a one-bedroom apartment for a year.”
In a 2023 post on X, Maye further shared what it’s like to stay with her son, writing that she often ends up “sleeping on mattresses or blankets on the floor, couches, or even a bed in the garage.” She mentioned that her other children, Tosca and Kimball, also sleep on the floor when visiting Elon. “We adapt,” she wrote. “It’s still better than sleeping on the ground in the Kalahari Desert with lions or hyenas nearby, which I did as a child.”
That adaptability seems to be a Musk family trait—and Elon is no exception.
Speaking at the 2022 Baron Investment Conference, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said he had spent years sleeping on factory floors in California and Nevada. “It was damn uncomfortable,” he admitted, but added that it was necessary to understand the production process and be available to troubleshoot problems around the clock.
In 2020, Musk famously vowed to sell “almost all physical possessions” and declared, “Will own no house,” saying he wanted more freedom. He followed through, selling off multiple mansions in California. But despite that public pledge, reports surfaced in 2022 suggesting that Musk had quietly upgraded his living situation. According to Bloomberg, he reportedly purchased a $6 million, six-bedroom mansion in West Lake Hills, Texas.
Officially, however, Musk has claimed to live in a compact, $50,000 tiny home near SpaceX’s Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. The house, reportedly just 400 square feet in size, is designed for maximum efficiency and function, with a basic layout that includes a living area, kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom.
