Guna (Madhya Pradesh): Union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Saturday opened the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) accounts of more than 880 girls from his Guna Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh by depositing double the amount required for the process from his personal account.

On the occasion, he also announced that he will similarly pay the minimum initial deposit amount required for the scheme for the girls born between May 1, 2025 to May 1, 2026.

An SSY account can be opened with a minimum initial deposit of just ₹250.

While taking part in a programme, the minister of communications said he has decided to open the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana accounts of girls born in a year from 1 May in Guna constituency by depositing the money personally.

He said he got the inspiration for this decision from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his (Scindia's) own family values.

As part of the innovative experiment, Scindia deposited ₹500 instead of Rs 250 in each to open the SSY accounts of 886 new-born girls -- 222 in Guna district, 274 in Ashoknagar district and 390 in Shivpuri district.

Scindia also said the parents of such girls will be encouraged to open the SSY accounts. Scindia said that so far, he has deposited over ₹4.30 lakh from his personal account.

During the event, Scindia also met some of these newborn girls and their family members, and handed over them certificates of the scheme.
