Meta, Govt Roll Out Initiative Against Online Scams

With the growing number of users falling prey to online frauds, Meta has partnered with the Centre to launch a two-month safety campaign to educate people on how to stay safe from online scams.

The initiative, ‘Scams se Bacho’ has been launched jointly by Meta and three government entities, including the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB).

Meta said in a statement that the safety campaign emphasises its commitment to safeguard people online, supporting the Centre’s goal to combat the rising cases of scams and cyber frauds in the country.

This video campaign sheds light on simple yet effective safety features on its social media platforms namely, Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, which will enable users to take control of their online safety and protect themselves from online scams and frauds.

“Meta continues to invest in technology and resources to stay ahead of scammers and our safety campaign ‘Scams se Bacho’ is an extension of our efforts to educate users about the safety tools and features they have at their fingertips to protect themselves from scams online,” said Shivnath Thukral, vice president and head of public policy, Meta India.

“We hope this campaign resonates with our users and equips them with the information they need to secure themselves along with reinforcing consumer habits that can help them stay safe and protect their friends and family,” Thukral added.

Social media being one of the highly used internet platforms by a majority of users, and limited awareness of the lurking dangers, users often overshare on their social streams. It’s easy for fraudsters to scrape personal data from public profiles or just literally find it disclosed on certain social profiles.

This development comes alongside another #AapkeHittMeJaari through YouTube Shorts, which was launched by ecommerce major Amazon India, for customers to remain vigilant against cyber frauds and scams, while also educating users on practices to ensure safe and secure online transactions.
