Viewers have been left 'so disappointed' by King & Conqueror's inaccuracies.
The new drama stars James Norton and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as feuding monarchs Harold Godwinson and William of Normandy, King & Conqueror chronicles the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings. But immediately after the programme went to air, fans of the programme took umbrage with the way things had been portrayed.
One fan fumed on X: "I am so disappointed in the King & Conqueror series. The historical inaccuracies were not necessary. Its already an amazing tale", whilst another joked: "The horses are very short…..budget horsey!"
In real life, William was 14 when Edward the Confessor was crowned in 1043. He wasn’t there, nor did he speak English and he didn’t meet Harold Godwinson, the future king, until 1065, which was the year before he invaded.

Writer Michael Robert Johnson said that he couldn't just put the facts on screen because 'the peaks and troughs of the emotions are never in the right place', reports the Express.
Other major inaccuracies include Mercia being portrayed as a threat, even though the area lostits independence in 879. Tostig’s wife did not die young as portrayed in the drama, in fact she outlived him by a nearly 30 years. One critic was also left unimpressed with the way that London was portrayed as being relatively small.
While the programme featured numerous dramatic moments that gripped some viewers, other audiences were far from impressed and slammed the BBC for the second consecutive evening earlier this week.
One fan announced they wouldn't be tuning in, mere minutes after the show began.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), they boldly rejected the BBC as they posted: "I'm not going to watch the second episode of @BBCOne #KingAndConqueror I'm going to go back in time with @Channel4 and #Gogglebox 2022... way better.."
Another viewer agreed: "The first five minutes were terrible. I lasted 15 minutes in total. I will not even be watching this for entertainment. #kingandconqueror."
One disgruntled viewer vented their frustration over the BBC licence fee, stating that those who pay had been "let down".
The irate social media user wrote: "The BBC have let themselves, the license payer, but most of all, history down. 'King and Conquerer' is a magnificent mess. The story writes itself. Risible, ruses not necessary. They should be sent to the corner to think about what they've done!"
Despite the backlash, not all fans were disappointed by the new James Norton drama as one fan praised: "And just like that, I’m invested #KingAndConqueror."
King and Conqueror broadcasts on BBC One at 9pm and can be watched on BBC iPlayer.
