When a baby breathes in, the floppy tissue folds inwards, causing noisy breathing known as a 'stridor'. Laryngomalacia is the most common cause of noisy breathing in infants.
While it's now known what causes the condition, experts at the NHS believe it's likely connected to how the muscles in this area have formed during and need extra time to grow and become strong. Laryngomalacia can sound alarming because of the noisy breathing but generally does not cause harm or put your baby at risk.
Noisy breathing can sound worse when taking faster, bigger breaths such as when crying, feeding or after a feed, being very active or lying flat. No treatment is needed and most babies grow out of this condition by the age of two.

She started: "Hello Everyone, a little update from us", the loving mum voiced her relief to be back home after Vinnie's hospital stint."
She expanded on Vinnie's health issues and mentioned her intuition wouldn't let her dismiss his symptoms as just passing reflux: "Having stayed in hospital this last week with Vinnie I am SO grateful we are now back home. Vinnie's 'reflux' journey is something I've never experienced before and my gut couldn't settle on 'it's just reflux this will pass'. I ended up taking Vinnie to A&E, and after further examinations, yes Vinnie has reflux and CMPA but also Laryngomalacia."
The mum-of-three revealed: "This is a common congenital condition, present at birth, where the soft tissues of the voice box collapse inward during feeding. To finally have answers and knowing as parents that we are not going crazy feels more settling yet nerve wracking. I feel relieved that we have been listened to and a care plan is in place for Vinnie, which avoids any potential surgery if all goes to plan.

"We just need to ensure Vinnie gains weight over the next month and go from there. One feed at a time," she continued, sharing the complex emotions of relief and concern they're experiencing.
"(Don't get me wrong... I know just how blessed we are as a family, but it really seems to be knocking us down this last year, and my nerves feel broken to say the least). But we keep going, we all do, we have to, because things will surely start to look up again soon."
