Liverpool parade crash: Keir Starmer issues statement after car drives into Liverpool fans

Prime minister has labelled the scene in Liverpool as "appalling" after whilst they took part in the club's title-winning parade.

An estimated 800,000 supporters packed the streets to salute their heroes on an open-top bus, but celebration turned to horror when a car ploughed into fans on Water Street. A man was detained following the incident.

Footage, which has seen by The Mirror, shows a vehicle mowing down a number of pedestrians. Others then opened the doors to the car after it had come to a stop.

The police and several ambulances attended the scene. The air ambulance was also cleared but It is still unclear as to how many people have been injured.

Starmer said: "The scenes in are appalling — my thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident. I’m being kept updated on developments and ask that we give the police the space they need to investigate."

have confirmed that people have been hit by a car. A police spokesperson said: "We are currently dealing with reports of a road traffic collision in city centre.

"We were contacted at just after 6pm today, Monday 26 May, following reports a car had been in collision with a number of pedestrians on Water Street. The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained. Emergency services are currently on the scene. We will issue more updates as we have them."

The North West Ambulance Service said in a statement: "We are currently assessing the situation and working with other members of the emergency services. Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible."

The parade in Liverpool had been going on for hours and was weaving its way through the city, heading towards the Strand after covering several miles. It began just after 2pm but was set to hit its peak until the early evening.
