Netflix's Department Q release date, cast and episode count as new trailer sparks frenzy

Netflix enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the creator of the hit series The Queen's Gambit is set to release a new crime series.

Department Q, written and directed by Scott Frank, stars Matthew Goode as DCI Carl Morck, a brilliant yet brash detective leading a cold-case unit in Edinburgh, reports .

The series is based on Afdeling Q, a collection of ten Danish Nordic noir crime novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen.

What is Department Q about?

Department Q is a gripping crime series centred around the brilliant yet flawed DCI Carl Morck, who heads a new cold case unit in Edinburgh.

According to Netflix's official synopsis: "DCI Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh Police.

"After a shooting that leaves a young PC dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement and the sole member of Dept. Q; a newly formed cold case unit.

"The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him.

"But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove.

"So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best - rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer."

Who is in the Department Q cast?

Downton Abbey star Matthew Goode leads the cast of Department Q as DCI Carl Morck. His other credits include The Crown, A Discovery of Witches and The Good Wife.

Other cast members include The Queen's Gambit star Chloe Pirrie, Jack Ryan's Alexej Manvelov, Line of Duty's Kelly Macdonald, Shetland's Mark Bonnar and Call the Midwife's Leah Byrne.

Meanwhile, Rob Bullock, Scott Frank, and Andy Harries act as executive producers of the show.

What happens in the Department Q trailer?

The Department Q trailer gives us an insight into the rough-around-the-edges DCI Carl Morck, who "blames himself" for his best friend's death.

We also get a first glimpse of the dark and gloomy Dept. Q office, as well as some of the tense action scenes that take place on the streets of Edinburgh.

The trailer is set to the song Club Foot by Kasabian, which nicely matches the show's gritty tone.
