Rio Ferdinand's son, 18, joins Premier League club on first professional contract

Rio Ferdinand's son Lorenz has signed his first professional contract with Premier League side Brighton after he graduated from the Seagulls academy as he looks to follow in his father's footsteps.

The 18-year-old, however, is not a centre-back like his legendary father - who played 455 times for Manchester United - was. He actually plays as a goalkeeper and has already made his first appearances in the Premier League 2 this year.

Ferdinand Jnr joined Brighton as an Under-13s star and picked up experience playing on loan with Havant and Waterlooville last season, becoming their first choice shot-stopper.

He started all six of their games after joining in March and managed to keep two clean sheets during that time. Ferdinand Snr travelled with wife Kate to watch his son make his senior football debut.

It turned out to be a successful first appearance as his side beat Marlow 3-1 in front of his father and stepmother.

After returning to the Amex, Ferdinand Jnr has now been rewarded with his first pro deal as he became one of 13 players to be promoted.

Academy boss Ian Buckman said: "We're pleased to see this cohort of players sign their first professional contracts here, with a number of them at the club from a very young age.

"All of them have already had some form of experience with the under-21s, while a few have been involved with the first team. We look forward to them continuing their careers with us and helping them develop over the coming years."

Ferdinand Jnr is the eldest son of Ferdinand Snr and his late wife Rebecca Ellison. Last year the Manchester United legend celebrated the youngster signing with agency New Era Sports Management - of which he is an ambassador along with brother Anton.

The company also boasts stars such as Everton duo Michael Keane and Mason Holgate and Atalanta defender Ben Godfrey.

Upon signing his deal with New Era, Ferdinand said: "Our eldest is on his own journey in football. Another nice moment signing with @neweraglobalsports, well earned through hard work & dedication.

"It's a long road full of ups and downs, so the right & professional support is required - so step forward @neweraglobalsports. Love you Lorenz."
