Steven Gerrard has been told there would be "no downside" for him if he was to become the next Wrexham manager. The Liverpool legend was tipped earlier this month to take over the hot seat if Phil Parkinson is removed from his job.
The current Red Dragons boss was under pressure at the time after Wrexham picked up just four points from their opening five Championship fixtures after gaining promotion from League One in April.
However, a win away at Norwich City and a draw with Derby County at home on Saturday have eased some of the strain on Parkinson, along with his side's progression to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
The former Sunderland and Bolton manager has also been backed by club director Shaun Harvey, who branded a report that talks had been held over his future as "an absolute disgrace".
Despite the reassurances, former Chelsea star turned football pundit Pat Nevin reckons Gerrard would be the perfect fit if the Wrexham job does become available due to a claimed lack of expectation attached to the role. The 45-year-old, who previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa, is currently out of work after his 18-month stint in charge of Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ettifaq ended in January.

"I have to say, Wrexham's a temptation for Steven Gerrard," Nevin told the Escapist Magazine. "With Wrexham, what's the downside of that? The expectations are minimal from most people in football. Maybe not from the owners, let's be fair.
"But he could make that extra special. My eyebrows are raising at that one. I'm thinking, 'Oh yeah, that could be good'. And of course, [being near the] north-west, Wrexham may have a wee understanding with Liverpool Football Club.
"I wouldn't be surprised at that one if that happened. Certainly from Stevie G's point of view, that might be a temptation."
Whilst Nevin appears convinced there would be no strain on Gerrard at Wrexham, the club's Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have made their Premier League ambitions crystal clear. The Red Dragons splashed out roughly £33million on fresh talent during the summer window as they prepared to battle in the second tier.
The heat on Parkinson has cooled somewhat over recent days, though it could easily flare up again with his side currently sitting 15th in the Championship standings. However, former Wrexham boss Dean Saunders reckons he deserves time to show his worth after guiding the club to three successive promotions.
"I think Phil Parkinson is doing the best job anyone could," Saunders told BestBettingSites.com. "Anyone can say he's spent plenty of money himself, but that doesn't make it easy in this league.
"The fact of managing players at this level is that you're taking players with talent, but without consistency. The task is to make them consistent.
"They've spent money and they've got Kieffer Moore, Nathan Broadhead and Josh Windass. They're all going to make an impact if they play well."
Wrexham are bracing themselves for a challenging encounter on Tuesday evening as they head to Leicester City City for their next league match. They will then host Birmingham City at the Racecourse Ground on Friday night.
