Teen killed when 'horribly dangerous' car-surfing TikTok challenge goes wrong

A teenager was killed after taking part in a TikTok challenge which also left another person permanently injured.

The 17-year-old boy took part in the "surfing" challenge - which sees people tie objects or themselves to cars while a vehicle is speeding. Two teenagers are now facing criminal charges after taking part in the deadly social media trend.

David Nagy, 17, had been riding on a table which was tied to the back of his friend's car on June 1. The friend allegedly "whipped" the vehicle into another car park, at a high school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which gave David a fatal head injury.

The suspect used rope to tie the table to his vehicle and then "recklessly operated" the car while the teen was riding on top, according to NBC10.

The driver, who has not been named, is now facing involuntary manslaughter charges, according to District Attorney Stephen Baratta.

In another unrelated incident, Eniya Serina Alvarado, 19, allegedly drove at 35mph while her friend, 20, stood on the boot of the vehicle in a car park. Alvarado's pal was thrown from the car and suffered severe head injuries, according to police.

This horror incident happened on March 18. Alvarado is now facing aggravated assault and aggravated assault by vehicle charges.

Both teenagers were not accused of "criminogenic thinking" or planning to hurt their pals, according to Fox 29. Despite this, prosecutors claim they are "allegedly criminally culpable" because the incidents were "so grossly negligent and reckless".

Baratta, speaking to Fox 29, said: "The families did have a closeness and a trust with these close friends — I mean they knew them very well. That's what's so heartbreaking in this case.

"It's important for the public to understand that these challenges can have severe, real-world consequences, creating significant risk to participants and sometimes the bystanders as well."

Police in Pennsylvania dubbed the "surfing trend" a "dangerous TikTok challenge". Both cases are expected to be resolved outside of court, without going to trial. The teens' criminal charges could be erased as these were first time offences for both teens.

The Mirror has reached out to TikTok for comment. The social media site told Fox News these car surfing videos violate their community guidelines.

TikTok added that 99.8% of these clips are removed proactively, and 92.4% of videos removed for violating the app’s rules are taken down before anyone views them.
