A lip reader has revealed what stunned Chelsea winger Cole Palmer said to teammate Reece James as they stood behind US President Donald Trump. There appeared to be some “confusion” at last night’s Club World Cup as Trump joined Chelsea players on stage as they lifted the trophy.
It came moments after the President was booed as he took centre stage in front of 81,118 people at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium. Trump was on hand to present James, 25, with the trophy after the Premier League side beat Paris Saint Germain 3-0.
TV cameras spotted Palmer, 23, asking “what is he doing” when Trump failed to join FIFA president Gianna Infantino at the side of the stage after presenting the trophy. Instead, Trump remained with the Chelsea players as they kicked off their celebrations.

Just moments before James lifted the trophy, the confused defender could be seen having an exchange with Palmer. According to Freeman, Palmer, with Trump standing in front of him, said: “No, no, just wait, wait… wait… wait”.
James can then be seen looking at the side of the stage and asking: “I can lift?” It is then that he starts the celebrations.

Palmer has previously explained he was a “bit confused” when the 79-year-old politician remained on stage. Speaking after the match, the goalscoring winger said: “I knew he was going to be here but I didn't know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.”
James believes the President may have had troubles hearing what he was meant to do while on stage. He said: “To be honest it was quite loud. I couldn't hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
While fellow Chelsea defender Levi Colwill explained Trump “wanted to stay,” reports the Mirror. The 22-year-old said: “They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage, and I thought that he was going to exit the stage, but he wanted to stay.”
Trump did eventually join Infantino and faded into the background as Chelsea celebrated the win. Speaking to broadcaster DAZN, Trump said football is a “great sport” and a “growing sport” in the United States.
The United States, along with Canada and Mexico, will host the 2026 World Cup. Trump said: “It's a big thing, Gianni's a friend of mine.
“But it's great to watch. This is a little bit of an upset we're watching today. [FIFA has done] fantastically well, it's a growing sport, it's a great sport."
Chelsea beat PSG 3-0 in the Club World Cup final with Palmer scoring two goals and forward Joao Pedro scoring the third. The Blues are said to have netted a staggering £84.7m for winning the competition.
