New Research: It seems impossible that diabetes and weight loss medicine can protect our brain. But this is absolutely true. This has been proved by a new research.
New Research: Diabetes and weight loss medicine can prove to be more effective than controlling blood sugar. It can also protect our brain. You might be shocked, but this is the truth. This has come to light from a recent research.
Research findingsResearchers at Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Ohio, USA, found during their study that patients with type 2 diabetes who take semaglutide (components found in Ozempic and Wegovy drugs) may have a significantly lower risk of developing dementia. Women and older people in particular may benefit more from this drug. This research was published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease on June 24. During the study, scientists found that type 2 diabetes patients taking semaglutide had a significantly lower risk of developing dementia compared to other antidiabetic drugs.
What is dementiaDementia is a condition that gradually makes it difficult for people to remember things and think clearly. This condition occurs when brain cells are damaged. Due to this, these cells are not able to communicate properly with each other. This damage to the cells increases over time. In conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, serious brain injury and stroke, our brain cells start getting damaged.
Studies conducted by scientists also indicate that 45 percent of dementia cases could be prevented by taking measures to prevent the above diseases. Semaglutide reduces appetite and helps control blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It is the active ingredient in the weight loss drug Wegovy and the drug Ozempic, which controls blood sugar levels and protects kidney function in type 2 diabetes patients.
What do researchers sayIt is known that the research team led by Professor of Biomedical Informatics Rong Xu analyzed three years of electronic records of about 1.7 million type 2 diabetes patients at the national level, after which they have come to this conclusion. Currently there is no effective treatment for dementia. In such a situation, this new study has emerged as a ray of hope for preventing or slowing the development of dementia among high-risk populations. Rong Xu says that although their findings potentially support the idea that semaglutide can prevent dementia, the limitations of this study prevent researchers from drawing concrete conclusions.
