AAP Challenges Legality of MCD Elections in Supreme Court Amid BJP Victory

New Delhi: The elections for the sixth member of the Standing Committee of the Delhi Municipal Corporation were held on Friday, which the Aam Aadmi Party termed illegal and now the party has reached the Supreme Court regarding this matter. CM Atishi launched a scathing attack on the BJP regarding this election and said that the election conducted by the BJP is completely illegal. Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi also termed this election as illegal, calling it against the rules and said that the elections have been conducted by ignoring the law.

Congress and Aam Aadmi Party boycotted this election, due to which the BJP candidate won. On Saturday, CM Atishi, while reacting to the election, said that these elections conducted by the BJP are illegal, unconstitutional and undemocratic. He told that according to the rules of the corporation, the members of the Standing Committee are elected only in the meeting of the corporation and only the mayor has the right to call this meeting. Apart from this, the meeting can also be chaired only by the Mayor or in his absence by the Deputy Mayor. Atishi alleged that the LG, who does not have the authority to give such orders, gave the orders and the corporation commissioner obeyed them and called a meeting and conducted the elections. The Aam Aadmi Party had already said that it would approach the Supreme Court on this matter and now a petition has been filed in the court.

In the election, BJP's Sundar Singh won by 115 votes, while the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress councilors boycotted the election, due to which not a single vote was cast in favor of the opposition. After this victory, the BJP has 10 and Aam Aadmi Party has 8 members in the 18-member standing committee of the Delhi Municipal Corporation. With this result, it has been decided that BJP will become the chairman of the standing committee. This election of MCD was chaired by the Additional Commissioner. The councilors of Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had announced to boycott the election, opposing the order of the LG. After the election, former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia also opposed this election and said that according to the rules of the corporation, only Mayor Shaili Oberoi has the right to call the House meeting.
