New Delhi: In a bid to extend social security benefits to millions of gig workers, the government has invited platform aggregators to register their workers on the e-Shram portal. This initiative aims to ensure that gig workers have access to crucial social security benefits.
Following registration, workers will receive a Universal Account Number (UAN), which will grant them access to various social welfare schemes. Union Minister of Labour and Employment Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya is scheduled to meet with platform aggregators on Wednesday to discuss the process.
The Ministry of Labour and Employment emphasized that this registration process is vital for providing workers with social welfare benefits and for creating an accurate registry of beneficiaries. The Ministry has released an advisory detailing a standard operating procedure (SOP) for aggregators, outlining their responsibilities which include registering workers and keeping their information up to date.
The central government has already completed testing for API integration with a few aggregators and is progressing with the registration process. "This collaborative effort aims to ensure complete coverage of gig workers, with ongoing cooperation between the Ministry and platform aggregators," said the Ministry.
Aggregators are also required to regularly update workers' details, including their work engagement and payment information. Any exits from the platform must be reported promptly to maintain accurate records.
To support the registration and onboarding process, a toll-free helpline (14434) has been established to offer information, assist with registration, and resolve any technical issues.
The upcoming meeting with Dr. Mandaviya is intended to raise awareness and encourage platform aggregators to participate in this significant initiative. Earlier this month, the Minister highlighted the government's commitment to exploring various methods to include gig and platform workers under social security schemes. For the first time, these workers will be formally recognized under the Code on Social Security.
The Ministry is working closely with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive framework that ensures adequate protection for gig and platform workers.
