PM Modi to Discuss Early Discharge of Indian Nationals from Russian Army During BRICS Summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to address the issue of nearly 20 Indian nationals still serving in the Russian Army during his upcoming bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The discussions will take place on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, scheduled for October 22-23 in Kazan, Russia.

During a media briefing ahead of his trip, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri revealed that around 85 Indians had previously returned from Russia after being illegally contracted to fight in the Ukraine conflict. Tragically, some of these individuals lost their lives, while nearly 20 remain in Russia. The Indian Embassy has been actively communicating with the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defence to resolve the situation of these nationals.

PM Modi's visit coincides with the 16th BRICS Summit, which focuses on "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security." This summit serves as a crucial platform for leaders to discuss pressing global issues and evaluate the progress of initiatives initiated by BRICS. In addition to discussions with President Putin, PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral meetings with other BRICS leaders and invited guests to explore future collaboration opportunities.

As the summit setting ready, the Indian government remains committed to ensuring the safety and timely return of its citizens, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in addressing such matters.
