Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly could not contain his excitement after learning that he is set to become teammates with Viktor Gyokeres. The Gunners have been locked in negotiations with Sporting for several weeks, but an agreement has now been reached between the two clubs.
Mikel Arteta made it no secret that he wanted to bolster his ranks with a No. 9 this summer, and his patience looks set to be rewarded. Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal worth £55million to secure the signature of Gyokeres, plus a further £8.6m in add-ons.
The news has gone down a storm among Gunners supporters, who have been left on tenterhooks by the lengthy saga, as well as some players. A clip has been shared online of Lewis-Skelly reacting to the news, grinning from ear to ear as he celebrated the move.
The England international showed the camera a picture of Gyokeres edited into an Arsenal shirt from his phone. Lewis-Skelly then imitated his soon-to-be teammate by doing his iconic celebration and covering his face with his hands.
The Gunners will be hoping that Gykokeres proves to be the final piece of the puzzle at the Emirates Stadium. Arteta's side have looked to have been crying out for a striker when missing out on lifting silverware over the past few seasons, and they are now set to have one of the best in the business among their ranks.
The 27-year-old scored 54 goals and registered 12 assists in 52 appearances in all competitions last season, and Arsenal will be hoping that his lethal finishing will help them fend off Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea in next season's title race.
Given Lewis-Skelly's reaction, the arrival of a marquee No. 9 looks set to be a major boost to morale in north London and provide the squad with the push that they may need to believe that they are truly capable of going all the way in a competition - both domestically and in Europe.
The arrivals of Noni Madueke and Martin Zubimendi are likely to have been warmly received as well. Kepa Arrizabalaga has also joined Arsenal from Chelsea in a deal worth £5million, where he will provide cover for fellow Spanish shot-stopper David Raya.
