BBC Ludwig's future confirmed as bosses 'make decision' on David Mitchell drama

The 's captivating murder mystery series Ludwig is set for a sensational return with a second season following its skyrocketing success.

Starring Peep Show star David Mitchell and 's Anna Maxwell Martin, Ludwig has already been branded "the best series from the BBC in years" by viewers. The crime drama series premiered on BBC One in September, with demands for a follow-up already reaching fever pitch.

A BBC insider has now revealed that bosses are ecstatic with the show's performance, teasing that a second series announcement is imminent.

The source told : "There have been a lot of noises about a second series and I would be absolutely gobsmacked if it didn't come back. Everyone involved at the BBC is delighted with how well the show has done.

"It's given them the perfect detective drama, a fresh take on a classic genre. The ratings have been through the roof and all the episodes have been in the Top 10 on BBC iPlayer since the show launched two weeks ago."

The source continued: "And it's not just the ratings that everyone is thrilled with, it's the rave reviews as well, in the press and on social media. You only have to read the comments, with fans demanding more episodes, to know that this will absolutely come back. Hopefully the BBC will make the official announcement before the end of the first season."

The third episode of Ludwig aired on Wednesday evening (October 9), but those unable to wait can binge-watch all six episodes available on BBC iPlayer.

In the captivating drama, comedian David takes on the role of John 'Ludwig' Taylor, a socially awkward puzzle setter whose uneventful life is thrown into chaos when his twin brother, a detective, disappears.

The character is reluctantly pulled into a world of mystery by his sister-in-law Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin) as he takes over his brother's identity to assist in the search for him.

The heart-stopping conclusion to the inaugural season reveals a staggering secret about the location of John's brother, coinciding with the moment John and Lucy stumble upon a critical hint.

David, who also contributes as an executive producer for Ludwig, hinted at the possibility of a follow-up series. Expressing optimism, he said: "Yes, that's certainly our hope that it will carry on. Fingers crossed. Of course you just hope that people enjoy the first series."

When probed about his aspirations for Ludwig becoming iconic, David chuckled and ambitiously claimed: "I'm megalomaniacal enough to say yes, maybe we will go down in legend as the greatest exponent of the genre."
