With its incredible blend of ultra-modern city living and authentic Arabian culture and hospitality, it is no surprise that Dubai is fast becoming one of the most popular holiday destinations for Brits. Last year, the UAE city saw a significant increase in tourism, with 1.32 million visitors from the UK, a 14% increase compared to 2023.
However, it must be remembered that cultures in Dubai differ significantly from those in the UK and visitors must pay heed to its rules to avoid public embarrassment, upsetting locals and ultimately risking fines or even prison. Dubai, deeply rooted in Islamic and Emirati traditions, places emphasis on modesty, respect for religious observances and community values. In a bid to help soon-to-be British tourists in Dubai, a TikToker has shared some of her tips on how to avoid being "the annoying Brit in Dubai".
"Things that tourists do that scream you're from the UK in Dubai," @dailysaveandsolve said in her video. "Let me save you from some major embarrassment if you ever visit".
She revealed that pointing at things with your left hand, a common activity when staring in awe at Dubai's impressive buildings like the world's tallest Burj Khalifa or while treking across the desert on the back of a camel, is a big no-no.
"The left hand is considered unclean in Emirati culture," the TikToker explained. "A British colleague of mine accidentally pointed to a menu item with his left hand and the server actually refused to take his order until he used his right."
In the Middle East, the left hand is traditionally associated with hygiene practices, particularly before the widespread use of toilet paper. While it's not strictly illegal, it's best to use your right hand or both hands when interacting with others to avoid potential offence or misinterpretations, especially in public and formal settings.
If you are left-handed, it's a good idea to be mindful of these cultural norms and try to adapt your behaviour in public spaces, particularly when interacting with locals.
Many left-handers in the comments have not taken too kindly to this advice. One wrote: "Dubai will never see me. You're not allowed to do anything there, I'm not even allowed to be left-handed."
Another left-hander told The Express: "I'd be so worried about upsetting locals if I ever went to Dubai. There would be no ill-intent but I would be constantly worried about getting myself banned by using my dominant hand as I do it naturally all the time."
In the TikTok, the creator also advised against eating with utensils instead of your right hand. This is because authentic Emirati dishes are meant to be eaten with your hand only and using a fork is seen as "completely disrespectful".
"My friend tried it at a sheikh's dinner and the entire table went silent. Mortifying," she said.
