A professional dog trainer has shared the "truth" about one of the most popular dog breeds of all, the Labrador. According to the Kennel Club: "The Labrador is the most popular of all pedigree breeds and his popularity comes from his versatility as family companion, service dog, guide dog as well as a working gundog."
Unsurprisingly, many people choose a Labrador when deciding on a family pet to welcome into their home. Dogs are commonly referred to as "man's best friend", thanks to their loyalty and unwavering affection for their owners.
Choosing to get a dog is a major decision as it signals a massive change to your overall lifestyle.
Getting a dog means committing to them and ensuring their health and happiness for their entire lifespan, so it's important you choose a breed that suits your capabilities and routine.
Many people turn to social media for advice and guidance when deciding on a dog, with canine behaviourist Will Atherton cultivating a devoted following on Instagram thanks to his expert advice on breeds, training methods and guidance on solving and curbing any unwanted issues.
In a recent Instagram post, the dog expert shared a carousel of images with a caption devoted to Labradors.
Will delivered a reality check for prospective owners seeking a different breed to a Labrador with all the same potential benefits in that, it isn't possible.
The expert explained: "Now it's no secret I adore Labradors, and I often get some version of the question 'I want the benefits of a Labrador but want something a bit unique, can I get a Vizsla, a GSP [German Shorthaired Pointer] or a Weimaraner and get the same benefits?'
"And my honest answer is... 'Well no, not really'. That doesn't mean I dislike those breeds, I've met some great ones, and they're often nice sweet dogs, but I can hand on heart say of all the great ones I've met, none of them have ever come close to the greatest Labradors I've met."
Not wavering on his stance, Will continued: "Will that upset some people? Probably. Am I prepared to lie to try and please people? Nope, absolutely not."
In the comments section, fellow dog lovers shared their thoughts. One person said: "Great post. As a 3x Labrador owner I have found myself wondering about Vizlas recently, not sure I could ever change!"
Someone else said: "Vizslas are wonderful but they need specific training! They have different needs than labs".
A third shared: "As the mum of an 8 month-old brown lab, at the moment, a bit overwhelmed by the intense energy and destructive qualities of the brown lab in question........I am sooooooooo reassured by these words".
Before getting a dog, it's important to do your research. It's also worth bearing in mind that training is essential, and not all dogs are suitable for first time owners.
If you're looking to welcome a dog into your home, consider the benefits of adopting a puppy or dog from a charity or local shelter instead of shopping from a breeder.
