A former cruise musician, who wishes to remain anonymous, warned: "There are rules that they have in terms of restaurants, where there is a dress code. That also depends on the time of day you go to the restaurant. You would have to wear enclosed shoes.

"It really depends on the time of day, you can genuinely wear what you want on the ship, but in the evening, they want to execute fine-dining, so you can't wear slippers, flip flops or sandals. During the day you can, but not for dinner."

"Before you go on your vacation, be sure to check out the dress codes for the restaurants on board. While some may be casual, others won't honour your reservation if you show up wearing shorts and flip-flops," Islands reported.

According to , cruise lines such as Silversea Cruises have an onboard dress code for their ocean and expedition ships after 6pm.
They said: "Women can wear trousers, a blouse, a skirt or a casual dress for an elegant casual evening. Gentlemen may wear an open-collar shirt and slacks.
"Regardless of the daily dress code, jeans, shorts, baseball caps, hats, sneakers and flip-flop-type footwear are prohibited after 6pm. Casual wear is suitable in outdoor venues no matter the time."

Another popular cruise line is Princess Cruises, which also has a strict dress code. In the dining rooms, shorts, pool wear, and baseball caps are not allowed. Shoes must be worn at all times.
Jeans are allowed to be worn as long as they aren't fraying and don't have holes. Passengers who do not comply with dress code rules could be escorted out of the restaurant, or, in the worst-case scenario, their holiday could be terminated.
