Meghan Markle is still feeling "terrified" about bringing her two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, back to the UK, sources have claimed. The Duchess of Sussex has not set foot in Prince Harry's home country since 2022, following his legal battle with the UK Government regarding the family's security while in Britain.
The Sussexes's security was downgraded when they quit the Firm five years ago, with the Duke challenging the dismissal of his High Court claim against the Home Office over the decision that he should receive a different degree of taxpayer-funded protection when in the country. Harry lost his High Court appeal last month and made a bombshell appearance on the BBC, calling his legal defeat a "good old-fashioned establishment stitch-up". But he also expressed his desire to make amends with the Royal Family, saying that he "would love a reconciliation".
However, the prospect of the Duke one day returning to the UK with his family seems highly unlikely, as, according to sources, the Duchess does not want to put her children "at risk".
A source told Hello! magazine: "In some ways, she [Meghan] is feeling stronger, and she wants to share that
"But she's still terrified of putting her kids at risk by coming back to the UK - any parent would panic if they were in Meghan's shoes.
"So even though Harry is really feeling the absence of his dad, especially after Trooping the Colour and Father's Day, the security stuff will probably always be an issue."
A royal expert justified the Duchess's fears and said she rightfully is "scared" about coming back to the UK with her children, as the "threats are real and genuine".
Former royal editor Duncan Larcombe told the magazine: "Meghan understandably feels scared about coming to the UK with the children.
"The threats are real and genuine. The threat is from lunatics, radical protesters that might want to make a name for themselves by jumping in front of them.
"Then, of course, you have the worst type, the terrorist threat. And there's no doubt Harry - and his family, as a result - is a huge target."
The source appeared to agree that a Sussex return would be highly unlikely, saying: "He [Harry] knows that things could've been so different if things had gone another way, but it's been five years since they left the UK and the chances of them coming back, even for a visit, seem slim to none. It's heartbreaking."
