Broadsands Beach, located near in North Devon, is currently inaccessible due to a landslide that has blocked public access. The once-popular beach, often hailed as a "must-visit" location, has been closed indefinitely. Nestled between Watermouth and , Broadsands Beach can only be reached by foot, requiring visitors to descend approximately 200 steps along the coastal path. However, the walkway has reportedly been destroyed by the landslide.
The nearby Watermouth Valley Camping Park, which owns the land surrounding the beach, confirmed the closure, stating that "access is currently closed due to a landslide." The park advised visitors, "You are advised not to attempt to access Broadsands until has completed their assessment and required works." It added: "We will be able to provide no more information until this has been completed, which we are told will be by 21st April."
According to , one local commented on the severity of the landslide: "It's a nasty slip, there's no other way down, you could probably get there from Combe Martin but just by kayak."
Broadsands Beach has long been a favorite among locals due to its quiet atmosphere, particularly at low tide when the beach is expansive.
One visitor shared their experience on Tripadvisor: "There were rarely more than a handful of people on the beach over the season, and going early or late meant the chance to have it to myself. The beach is small when the tide is in, but remarkably large and spacious at low tide. A must-visit if you are prepared to put in the effort - there are few places this unspoiled left."
Another visitor wrote: "It was heavenly. It was empty and low tide when we arrived, so plenty of beach to sit on. You can easily get caught out when the tide turns, so keep a watch."
Broadsands Beach was included in The Times' 2024 list of "seven of the UK's best secret beaches," with the publication describing it as a destination for the "brave-hearted" due to its steep descent.
The Times recommended visiting the beach at low tide for the best views of . The article also suggested a visit to the National Trust-owned Hunter's Inn hotel, known for its hearty pub meals, as a perfect nearby stop.
The Beach Guide further highlights that Broadsands is a little-known gem, one of the best beaches for swimming along the coastline. It also boasts a few caves, adding to its appeal as a spot for exploration, although for now, these activities will need to wait.
While the cleanup efforts are underway, nearby beaches such as Newberry, Combe Martin, and Wild Pear remain accessible to visitors.
