The beautiful UK city that's 'one of the world's most walkable'

For the perfect , many would rather not have to pay the cost of a hire car to explore the city. According to , studies have even found that people who live in walkable cities are happier, healthier and find it easier to build community with their neighbours.

On top of this, fewer cars and an easily navigable city also bring other benefits, including better public transport and, as a result, better air quality. Now, Time Out asked over 18,500 people to rate how easy their is to navigate on foot, with four UK cities making it into the top 20. The most walkable city in the UK, coming in third worldwide, is a seaside gem, miles away from the bustling cities of and Manchester.

Nestled among the unspoilt green hills of the South Downs, with miles of pebble-stoned beach fringed by colourful beach huts, is .

An incredible 88% of residents rated its walkability "amazing" or "good", unsurprising given the number of picturesque streets full of colourful buildings holding local boutiques and cafes, including the historic maze-like area known as The Lanes.

Renowned for its atmosphere, pier and vegan cuisine, Brighton has become a magnet for Londoners seeking sun and sea during summer. Of course, a key attraction is Brighton Palace Pier, which opened in 1899 and is home to fairground rides, bars, restaurants and deckchairs to enjoy those stunning sea views.

A much newer attraction is Brighton i360, a 162-metre moving observation tower providing panoramic views of the sea, city and South Downs beyond. It opened in August 2016 and cost £46.2 million to construct.

According to Time Out's Liv Kelly, "the city's best pubs, bars and all fall within the same small radius".

Even if the sun decides not to shine, you needn't stay sheltered away in your hotel or B&B, as there is plenty of indoor activities to enjoy, including the Royal Pavilion, which stands boldly apart from its surrounding buildings with its opulent domes and miarets, inspired by the Taj Mahal.

Finally, head to the , the world's oldest operating aquarium, home to Gothic arches that date back to 1872. Here you can find the Lagoon, populated with stingrays and boasting an interactive rock pool.

Also making the top 20 were Edinburgh, Cardiff and London, claiming seventh, 10th and 18th place respectively. boasts a tram and bus service, Cardiff a small central area similar to Brighton and London with every type of public transport you can think of from the Underground, buses and trams.

The title of "most walkable city" in the world was awarded to , where a staggering 91% of locals responded "amazing" or "good" to the survey.
