June, often overlooked as a booking month for anything beyond the next school break, is in fact a home or abroad for Christmas. It sounds counterintuitive, and maybe even off-putting, but as it turns out, thinking ahead can be the smartest strategy. Fred Harrington, personal finance expert at explained why June creates the perfect conditions for .

"Most people think booking Christmas flights in June is mad, but the data tells a completely different story," he said. While the average traveller waits until autumn to lock in festive , by then, the market has already shifted - and not in their favour.

There's a pattern observed in the festive airfare calendar, with search traffic rising in September.

October sees serious bookings take off, and by November, prices are climbing steeply, and anyone still hesitating faces a brutal combination of limited choice and maximum fares.

"Airlines know families will pay whatever it takes to get home for the holidays, so prices can jump substantially compared to off-peak times," the expert warned.

But June occupies a curious, overlooked space in this cycle, as it's not early enough for the super-organised to dominate the data, and not late enough to trigger the usual pricing spike.

The result is a pocket of relative calm and competitive prices that won't last too long.

"Airlines release their December inventory months in advance, and right now in June, they're still trying to gauge demand," Fred explained.

With fewer people searching for December flights, airline pricing systems, which respond dynamically to demand, have yet to make their aggressive leap.

Complex algorithms digest millions of data points daily, adjusting prices accordingly. These algorithms are designed to exploit human behaviour - specifically, our habit of delaying plans until urgency strikes.

Fred said: "The algorithms are incredibly smart, but they also follow patterns. June represents a dead zone for Christmas flight searches. Airlines haven't ramped up their festive pricing yet because demand signals are still quiet."

Those who wait until September might find themselves in a race with every other holidaymaker - and facing the kind of fares that can derail an entire travel budget.

Fred pointed out: "June sits in this weird middle ground where airlines are still offering competitive rates to fill their December inventory."
