Chennai Wakes Up To Cool Weather After Overnight Heavy Rain; Will Showers Continue To Lash?

Chennai: The city experienced a refreshing change in weather this morning following a night of heavy thunderstorms that brought much-needed rain to the city and surrounding areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning today. Residents woke up to cooler temperatures, a welcome relief after days of sweltering heat that saw temperatures soaring above 100 degrees Fahrenheit.The Chennai Meteorological Centre reported that many areas in South and West Tamil Nadu might not receive significant rainfall in the coming days. However, the northern parts of Tamil Nadu and the Delta regions can expect substantial rain over the next few days. Towards the end of next week, thunderstorms are anticipated to spread across the rest of the state.

Last night, parts of South Chennai and its suburbs were heavily affected by storms, with rainfall amounts ranging from 40 to 60 mm in many places, and isolated areas even receiving between 80 to 90 mm, as per a solo forecaster on X. Other parts of the city experienced lighter showers, with totals around 5 to 10 mm. Light to moderate rain is expected to continue throughout the day.As per the latest forecasts, the Chennai Meteorological Centre indicated that there is a high chance of heavy rain in Chennai, Chengalpattu, and Tiruvallur districts until 10 a.m. today. Additionally, moderate rainfall is predicted for the districts of Ranipet, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Viluppuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai. Light to moderate rain is also expected in Puducherry and Karaikal.The Meteorological Centre has stated that there is a likelihood of light to moderate rain in several ocations across Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal, until September 26. This forecast brings hope to residents who have been enduring the recent heatwave, promising a gradual return to more comfortable weather conditions.
