Thiruvananthapuram: Neeramankara–Azhankal riverfront development project, a new leisure and recreation hub in the city, is nearing completion. Designed as a key urban tourism destination, the project aims to transform the banks of the Karamana River into a vibrant public space.

Minister for general education and labour V Sivankutty, who is also the Nemom MLA, visited the project site on Friday to evaluate the development. The initiative was launched by the state govt through the irrigation department.

A detailed proposal was submitted to Smart City Thiruvananthapuram Ltd, which approved an administrative sanction for Rs 17.6 crore. The project includes the renovation of a 2km-long pedestrian walkway along the riverbank. The upgrades feature a paved pathway, dedicated parking for around 80 cars and 100 two-wheelers, beautification of riverside boat jetties and a radio park.

A 1km-long cycling track is also being laid to encourage eco-friendly mobility. Construction is progressing on open-air gyms, green parks and rest areas along the walkway. Retaining walls were strengthened and ornamental plants will be added along the slopes of the riverbank. Near the Shankarnagar section, the project includes stone-paved ghats, tiled pavilions and an open-air theatre, which will host cultural events.

Additional features include two boat landing points and a riverside balcony with shelter to enjoy rains. The project area will also feature cafes and snack counters. CCTV cameras will be installed and modern toilet facilities will be constructed. The project also includes riverbank conservation efforts, which are now completed. The width of the existing walkway was expanded and interlock paving work is in its final stages. Grass was planted along the adjoining bund for stability.

The walkway is being designed as a versatile space with yoga areas, family gathering zones, photo shoot spots and fishing points, catering to a wide variety of visitors and interests. The minister stressed the importance of long-term maintenance and announced that systems will be put in place to ensure proper upkeep of the area. Once completed, this riverfront is expected to become one of the premier tourism destinations in the state capital. Additionally, a suspension bridge across the Karamana River has been proposed as part of the expansion, with the Kerala Land Development Corporation (KEL) tasked with its implementation.
