Corpn to vaccinate stray dogs against rabies

Coimbatore: As many as 1,10,000 stray dogs in the city will be vaccinated against rabies through a special drive initiated by the Coimbatore Corporation. The drive will cover the entire population within 10 months in addition to the sterilization process.

The corporation had allocated Rs 50 lakh for this purpose in the current fiscal year budget. The rabies vaccination drive for stray dogs was inaugurated on Thursday at Race Course of Ward 66.

A corporation health official said two mobile vans have been allocated for this purpose with a target of 200 dogs each per day.

"Each mobile van will have a veterinarian, a helper and two dog catchers. Though the stray dog population data is based on 2013 data, there might be an increase in the population, but simultaneous deaths also occur. This is a measure to eradicate rabies. Though a few dog bite cases have been reported none of it is of rabies. There was only one suspected death reported in the last six months. Besides, a special awareness campaign for pet owners has been planned to mandate rabies vaccination for pet dogs too," the official said.

The officer added that the dogs will have colour markings on the head that will last for a month as an indicator that it is being vaccinated against rabies. To ensure that all stray dogs are covered, the team will proceed with one ward at a time.

The corporation has about 10,000 vaccinations in stock and will procure more based on the requirements.
