Median under Gandhipuram flyover to be converted into parking space

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore Corporation has begun work on converting the median under the Gandhipuram flyover near the GP signal into a parking space. This is to facilitate hassle-free movement on the road under the flyover and to avoid unapproved parking outside the omnibus stand in Gandhipuram.

On Thursday night, workers started removing sand under the flyover.

The stretch from the GP signal to Textool bridge is often congested due to lack of parking facilities for visitors to the omnibus stand.

The omnibus stand, which was renovated at an estimate of ₹3.68 crore recently, does not have sufficient parking facilities for visitors. To address the increasing unauthorised parking issue, the corporation has planned to create parking facilities in the available space under the flyover. For this purpose, the corporation had sought permission from the highways department.

The parking space will accommodate at least 130 two-wheelers. For the four-wheeler, a piece of 25 cent of land opposite the omnibus stand has been identified, and fencing work has been completed. It will accommodate around 30 four-wheelers.

According to a corporation officer, these places will be developed with paver blocks. The project is being carried out from the corporation's general fund.

The officer said, "We have taken up only two bays for this project from the GP signal. The space below the down ramp is excluded. These will be sufficient to address the traffic issue. Parking charges will be decided after the completion of the work."
