COIMBATORE: Two men were arrested in Coimbatore district on Saturday for sale of mephentermine sulphate vials without licence.
The Mettupalayam police seized 2,275 vials worth ₹10 lakh, ₹28,000 in cash, a car, and three mobile phones from the duo, identified as Senthilkumar, 40, and Shankar, 36, of Erode.
During a vehicle check at Tank Medu on the Mettupalayam–Annur Road, the police stopped a car and found the vials inside.
A police officer stated that mephentermine sulphate injection vials should not be sold without a doctor’s prescription. Senthilkumar, a weightlifter, and Shankar jointly run a nutrition and bodybuilding supplements shop in Erode. According to police, Senthilkumar learned about the illegal use of mephentermine and, along with Shankar, began procuring the vials online.
They supplied the vials to gym owners, trainers, and athletes in Coimbatore, Tirupur and Avinashi based on orders.
“They were caught while coming to deliver one such order in Mettupalayam,” the officer added. The duo reportedly bought each vial for ₹300 and sold it for ₹350–₹400.
"Mephentermine sulphate is typically used to manage low blood pressure during surgery. However, some people misuse it to boost energy and endurance -- especially among athletes, during high-intensity workouts and in weightlifting. As it stimulates the central nervous system, it may give users a false sense of confidence, potentially leading to habitual misuse," the officer said.
The police registered a case. The duo have been remanded in judicial custody.
