Kottayam: Hindu Aikya Vedi, a Hindu organisation, has opposed the construction of a new pond in Sabarimala and claimed that it is unscientific.
Addressing a press conference in Pathanamthitta on Saturday, Haridas Kadammanitta, the outfit's vice president, said that the move will lead to serious environmental issues.
"The eastern side of the temple is a slope. The pond is being constructed after levelling this side. When water gets filled in the pond, it will lead to increased pressure," he said. He also said that the spot is prone to mudslides during heavy rains. If that happens, it will weaken the Valiyanadappanthal and other constructions above that, he added.
The leaders of the outfit also said that it will pose a threat to the Thirumuttom. They also said that the contaminated water that flows down during rains will flow into the pond. They also said that going ahead with the construction despite safety concerns is suspicious.
The leaders also claimed that the police initially opposed the construction of the new pond. However, they withdrew their opposition following political pressure, they alleged. However, the project is being implemented with the permission of the high-power committee. They also alleged that neither Lord Ayyappa devotees nor Hindu organizations demanded a new pond.
"The board does not have sufficient money to arrange basic facilities for the devotees. They are not ready to find sponsors for that," they alleged. They also urged the Board to implement toilet facilities and drinking water projects.
