Coal mining sector needs modernising, say experts

Dhanbad: Mining experts, technocrats, and industry leaders from across the globe gathered in Dhanbad to brainstorm ideas for promoting innovation, sustainable strategies and safety in underground mining at an international exhibition titled Enhancing Production, Productivity and Safety in Underground Mining (EPPSUM-2025) on Friday.

Coal India Limited chairman P M Prasad inaugurated the event.

D C Panigrahi, former director of IIT-ISM Dhanbad stressed on the urgent need for urgent need for revamping underground mining practices through technology to make underground mining safe and more efficient. Bharat Coking Coal Limited CMD Samiran Datta, speaking at the event, highlighted on strategic importance of underground mining for coal and critical minerals. "Collaborative efforts are needed to modernise the sector," Dutta said.
