Cannes 2025: Tom Cruise's 'Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning' gets 5-minute standing ovation; actor says 'grateful to have been able to entertain you'

Three years after soaring into the Cannes Film Festival with Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise returned once more, this time with the world premiere of Mission: Impossible — Final Reckoning, the latest explosive entry in the long-running action franchise.

Cruise, 62, was met with a roaring five-minute standing ovation following the premiere at the Grand Theatre Lumiere on Wednesday. A video posted by Deadline captures the actor making his way down the aisle of the packed theatre as the audience applauded the latest instalment of the franchise.


Joined by director Christopher McQuarrie and co-stars Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Hannah Waddingham, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, Pom Klementieff, and Greg Tarzan Davis, Cruise was seen smiling and waving as the theatre erupted with hoots and applause after the screening.


The Hollywood star was seen taking a microphone and expressing his gratitude to the festival audience. “I’m very grateful to be a part of this franchise,” he said, recollecting his 30-year journey as the face of Mission: Impossible.




The eighth Mission: Impossible film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, was the biggest Hollywood tentpole to hit the French Riviera this year. The actor also took a moment to praise his director, who has now helmed four films in the series. “Every step of the way, what you've done, how you've expanded it, how you just went beyond our expectations,” Cruise said, calling the director “absolutely brilliant.”

“To be here in Cannes and have these moments—as a kid, I couldn’t have dreamed of something like this,” he said. “I’m very grateful to have been able to entertain you with this franchise for 30 years.”

He also hinted at more collaborations to come, saying he looks forward to working with McQuarrie again in the future.

Before stepping away, Cruise turned to the crowd once more, offering heartfelt thanks for their continued support.



Cruise’s presence at the festival stirred a media frenzy and delighted crowds, with his arrival. Cruise took time to sign autographs for fans lined along the promenade, further fuelling excitement among fans. While some speculated he might replicate his daring 2022 entrance—when a fighter jet flyover accompanied his Top Gun: Maverick screening—Cruise opted for a more traditional red carpet appearance this time.

Despite Cannes’ usual red carpet restrictions, McQuarrie broke protocol by snapping several group selfies before the screening.

Final Reckoning continues the story launched in 2023’s Dead Reckoning Part One, concluding McQuarrie’s globe-trotting narrative about an AI-fueled apocalypse. True to franchise form, the film is packed with high-octane stunts and breathless action sequences, with Cruise again front and centre as the indomitable Ethan Hunt.

The film's nearly three-hour runtime has prompted speculation it could be Cruise’s final mission. But while both he and McQuarrie have offered conflicting hints about the future. Cruise sidestepped any firm confirmation during a surprise appearance at McQuarrie’s masterclass earlier in the day and called the film “the culmination of three decades of work,” and urged fans to simply “see it and enjoy.”

With Final Reckoning set to hit North American theatres on May 17, the studio is banking on the film to reignite box-office momentum after Dead Reckoning Part One fell short of expectations, grossing $571.1 million globally on a budget nearing $300 million.
