KOLKATA: Seasoned campaigner Anushtup Majumder was named the skipper of the Bengal Ranji Trophy side for the upcoming season after a Cricket Association of Bengal 's selection committee meeting here. Majumder replaced Manoj Tiwary, who retired at the end of last domestic season.
Started playing for Bengal in 2004, this will be 40-year-old Majumder's first stint as Bengal red-ball skipper after having led the side in the shorter formats before. Majumder led the side in their pre-season practice matches against Punjab this time.
Majumder has emerged as the 'crisis man' of Bengal cricket since coming to the team's rescue a number of times in the last few years. "We were looking for a responsible, experienced player and will be available throughout the season," a CAB official said.
Majumder was named CAB's best cricket of the year for his consistent performance in the 2023-24 season scoring 510 runs in seven Ranji matches at an average of 63.75 with three centuries and a fifty. He was also the side's highest scorer in Vijay Hazare meet getting 319 runs.
"Winning the Ranji Trophy remains my long-cherished dream. We have come close to achieving it, but will again give it a shot this time," Majumder, who has more than 5000 first-class runs, stated before the pre-season. He is hopeful of Bengal's good show this time. "We have a strong team and with the return of Wriddhiman Saha and Sudip Chatterjee, we are capable of beating any side," said Ruku, as he is commonly called in the Bengal cricketing circle.
Majumder, who came through the ranks from the Under-19 level, played for the Railways in the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons as their employee. But his love for Bengal saw him leaving that secured job to represent his home state.
The middle-order batter has played for India 'A' in 2012 and was in the Kolkata Knight Riders squad and played four matches for Pune Warriors in the 2012 IPL.
