Elon Musk does not seem to be in favour of the tariffs introduced by the Donald Trump government on countries across the world. And here's more proof of it. This time Tesla CEO made his point that Tariffs don't work without actually saying or writing a single word. In a post on Twitter, Elon Musk shared a video of the late economist Milton Friedman . In the two-minute-long video, Friedman is delivering his famous "pencil speech."
Elon Musk just shared the video on his timeline without adding any comment or even an emoji. So far, he has also not replied to any comment on the video shared. Friedman can be seen methodically explaining how the global supply chain works to produce a pencil.
What Milton Friedman said in the video shared by Elon Musk
“There’s not a single person in the world who could make this pencil,” is how Friedman starts the talk in the video. “Remarkable statement? Not at all. The wood from which it’s made, for all I know, comes from a tree that was cut down in the state of Washington. To cut down that tree, it took a saw. To make the saw, it took steel, to make the steel, it took iron ore.”
Friedman then goes on to add how the pencil’s graphite center came from mines in South America, rubber eraser came from “Malaya, where the rubber tree isn’t even native. It was imported from South America by some businessmen, with the help of the British government.” “Literally, thousands of people cooperated to make this pencil … What brought them together and induced them to cooperate to make this pencil? There was no commissar sending out orders from some central office. It was the magic of the price system … That is why the operation of the free market is so essential,” he further added.
Elon Musk made 'fun' of President Trump's economic adviser Peter Navarro
Elon Musk's video post of Milton Friedman came after he publicly made fun of Peter Navarro, one of the loudest supporters of tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on imports.
“A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing,” Musk wrote about Navarro last week. “Results in the ego/brains>>1 problem.”
In another post, again a reply, Musk wrote that Navarro "ain’t built sh—."
On his part, Navarro stressed that there is absolutely no difference of opinion or rift with Musk. He added Musk is likely just trying to protect his own financial interests.
