NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday accused Congress of taking contradictory positions on using Aadhaar for voter identification, following the Supreme Court's recent suggestion to the Election Commission regarding Bihar's electoral roll revision.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya pointed to Congress's fierce opposition in 2021 when the Modi government proposed voluntary linking of Voter ID with Aadhaar.
In a social media post on X, Malviya wrote, "2021: Modi Govt proposes voluntary linking of Voter ID with Aadhaar. Congress protests: ‘Aadhaar is not proof of citizenship — it only proves residency!’ ‘If you are using Aadhaar for voting, you are giving voting rights to non-citizens!’
2025: Same Congress now demands that the Election Commission accept Aadhaar as proof of citizenship during the Special Intensive Revision in Bihar — so that illegal migrants/non-citizens can be included in the voter roll! Shamelessness has a new name: Congress."
This came after Congress hailed the Supreme Court’s suggestion as an "initial win" and reiterated its demand to include Aadhaar, voter ID, and ration card during the revision process.
“We consider this as our initial victory. They said that Aadhaar card, ration card, and others must also be considered during the process — and this is what we wanted,” Congress leader Pramod Tiwari told ANI.
“If the Election Commission tries to oppose it, it will be slammed by the Supreme Court,” he added.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court allowed the Election Commission to continue with its Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The process, initiated by the EC to update voter lists ahead of the state assembly polls, has drawn criticism from opposition parties. They argue that the short timeline and stringent document requirements could disenfranchise many eligible voters.
In its order, the apex court acknowledged the limited timeframe, given that elections are due in Bihar in November. It posted the matter for further hearing on July 28, directing the EC to submit its affidavit within a week.
During the hearing, the bench opined that Aadhaar should be among the list of documents allowed as valid ID proof in the revision exercise.
